Cycling in the rain: tips, gear, and safety

2 minute read

Колоездене в дъжда: съвети, екипировка и безопасност

The rainy season is already here, and for some, cycling is not pleasant, but with the right gear, attitude, and skills, you can enjoy riding. We would all prefer to ride in warm and dry weather, but sometimes that’s not an option. Don’t let bad weather stop you.

1. There is no such thing as bad weather

With a good waterproof jacket, helmet, and gloves, you will feel more confident on the road or in the mountains. If it rains for a long time, but you have the most suitable gear, you won’t be cold or wet. Waterproof clothing from Endura is ideal for such weather.

2. How dangerous is the water?

Do not ride through puddles or water. You won’t be able to see how deep it is. Avoid manhole covers or painted lines on the road. If you cannot avoid them, try to pass slowly over them.

3. Feel like a child!

If you do get splashed by a puddle, don’t get upset or spoil your mood, but feel like a child. Go back to your past and remember how fun splashing was and how you deliberately walked through puddles. Riding in the rain allows you to restore those precious memories from your childhood. However, if you don’t suffer from nostalgia for your past childhood and want to stay as dry as possible, choose mudguards for your bike from the brands Zefal and Simpla. Sometimes they may not stop all the splashes on your shoes, and for those cases, gaiters can help significantly.

4. More confidence

All the skills you acquire will give you more confidence when facing rainy days, both on and off the bike. Because if you can get through a rainstorm or just a rainy day with your body and mind intact, you are ready for almost anything.

5. Ride carefully

Despite the strength and confidence you can gain riding in the rain, take more time to get around when it’s raining. Test your brakes at the start of your trip. Consider reflective and bright clothing and reflective trouser bands – you can never be too visible. Rain reduces cyclists’ visibility, so it’s a good idea to ride with lights in wet weather. Ideal lights for your bike are the headlights and taillights offered by the brands Blackburn, Sigma and Ridefit.

6. Take care of your bike after riding in the rain

Last but not least, take care of your bike’s maintenance. Clean the chain after wet riding and reapply oil to help the chain last longer. For bike maintenance, you can use products from Weldtite - degreasers, rim cleaning brushes, Weldtite oils, or tire repair kits.

Then it’s time for a hot shower, changing into dry clothes, and rest...
