The story behind Drag Protective Gear
2 minute read
The roots of Drag Protective Gear go back to the early 2000s, when Drag was already establishing itself as a leading bicycle manufacturer in Bulgaria. After numerous participations in international competitions – from cross-country to road racing – the Drag team began to feel a lack: quality and affordable protective gear designed with the real needs of racers and enthusiasts in our country in mind.
In 2005, the design department started the first developments. At that time, the focus was on elbow and knee pads – durable yet lightweight, with an inner layer of a new synthetic material that absorbs impact without restricting movement. The products quickly gained popularity among local downhill and BMX riders, who tested them in the conditions of Vitosha, Lokorsko, and competitions along the Black Sea coast.
By 2007, the range already included helmets, inspired by professional road and mountain models used by teams riding Drag. That same year saw the release of the first series of winter gloves with Gel-Therm technology, combining warmth, grip, and protection at low temperatures.
Over the next decade, Drag Protective Gear gradually expanded its portfolio – more aerodynamic road helmets appeared, tougher elbow pads for enduro, and complete sets for youth riders who start riding at an early age. All products are designed in Sofia, with much of the testing supported by Bulgarian and foreign athletes riding Drag.
The climax came in 2025 with the introduction of Drag Kabuto – the brand’s first children’s full-face helmet with a detachable chin guard. The name “Kabuto” comes from the traditional Japanese samurai battle helmet – a symbol of protection, courage, and honor. The model combines nearly 20 years of experience in creating protective gear with new technologies: modular design, 24 ventilation holes, insect mesh, antibacterial pads, and a weight of only 382 g.
Today, Drag Protective Gear remains true to its mission: to offer affordable protection created by riders – for riders. From the first elbow pads to Kabuto – this is a story of persistence, innovation, and love for cycling.
