Children's Bicycle Seats

Most children's bicycle seats are suitable for children aged from 9 months to 4 years. The lower limit depends on your child's ability to sit steadily without your help. Some seats support children and can be suitable for children from 6 months old, allowing the child to sit propped up. These seats are comfortable because they allow the child to fall asleep without sliding forward or sideways.

The upper limit is restricted by weight, not age. Seats are usually designed for passengers up to 20 kilograms. Even if a seat looks strong enough to hold more weight, it is not a good idea to exceed its limit. The issue is not that it might break, but that handling the bicycle becomes much more difficult with heavy passengers, especially when the seat is mounted at the back.

How many children can we transport?

It is possible to use seats both in front and at the back simultaneously on one bicycle, but this option is suitable only if you live in a very flat country. Otherwise, the bicycle becomes very heavy, bulky, and difficult to control. A child trailer is a great solution for two children. If you only need one child seat, the rear-mounted seat offers undeniable advantages in terms of bicycle handling and safety.

Rear Seats

Bellelli's rear seats come in three main designs – cantilevered from the tube to the saddle, fixed to the rear luggage rack, and fixed directly onto the seat tube and saddle. Those that attach to the frame (or to a rack bolted to the frame) are more stable and sturdy but cannot be mounted on bicycles with rear suspension.

Bellelli has created the Hi-Viz system (High Visibility seats) for high visibility, integrated into their rear bicycle seats. High visibility seats increase safety both during the day and at night. Their limestone yellow color makes them more visible than all other pastel-colored seats on the market. The fluorescent pigment is especially visible when illuminated by incandescent bulbs, such as those used in car headlights, and enhances safety in sunlight.

Cycling with a Child Seat

Even if you are used to riding with a rear basket, you need to get used to the feeling of cycling with a child seat. Baskets load the hubs, while the child seat loads the rear hub – exactly where the bicycle becomes destabilized. Before putting your child on the bike, try riding it with weight on the seat – for example, a load of 10-15 kg. This will give you a clear idea of how differently you will feel your bike with an additional passenger. Do not be tempted to ride the bike on steep roads. The bike will be much more balanced with your weight on the seat, so just change the gear. If that doesn’t work, the safest option is to get off and push. On slopes, accidents can happen very easily, so be careful.

You can stabilize the bike’s balance if you use a basket at the front where you can carry your shopping bags. The additional weight will keep the handlebars and front wheel stable on the road.

Safety

Feet in the spokes are the most common cause of hospitalization of children when it comes to child seats. Footrests are not enough – the foot can slip off, and the child may forget about the footrest and let it hang. It is essential that every seat has secure foot straps. Remove all items that could reach the spokes – scarves, hats, long shoelaces. It is extremely important that the child wears a child helmet when riding a bicycle, even if in a seat. In some countries, this is legally required. Even if not legally required, the helmet is still essential for your and your child's protection. A reflective vest or shirt with reflective elements is also important to be more visible to other road users.
