Sterrato - backstory

Sterrato is a gravel bike from Drag Bicycles, created in 2018, at the dawn of the gravel discipline worldwide. The bike was designed to meet new trends and to bring the first Bulgarian gravel bike to the Bulgarian market.

The name Sterrato comes from Italian and means "dirt road" or "gravel road". In cycling circles, the term "strade sterrate" is used for unpaved, rough roads popular among gravel and adventure cyclists.

Choosing this name for the DRAG Sterrato model emphasizes its purpose – to perform equally well on asphalt, dirt roads, and light off-road terrain.

To once again respond to the technological and cultural development of the bicycle industry, in 2024 Drag Bicycles created the Drag Sterrato Mho – the electric version of the Sterrato. This bike was developed in collaboration with MAHLE Smart Bike Systems and their components.

Who are Mahle Group?

Mahle Group is a company founded in 1920 in Germany by Ernst and Hermann Mahle, who began developing bestselling products and establishing a reputation as global innovators. They are pioneers in efficient mobility, and their innovations continue to advance ecological and alternative transportation methods to this day.

Their goal? To help people get from point A to point B efficiently and comfortably while being eco-friendly. One of their first projects was the aluminum piston for automobiles.

Mahle Group today

Today Mahle Group generates revenue of over 12.8 billion euros and has over 72 thousand employees worldwide.

As part of efficient mobility, besides automobiles, Mahle also has a huge contribution to the bicycle industry. MAHLE Smart Bike Systems develops hardware and software solutions for electric bicycles – for manufacturers, dealers, and passionate cyclists alike.

X20 and X30 electric motors.

Their innovation Mahle X20 is an electric motor drive system for electric bicycles. It includes a motor, a battery that can be integrated into the frame or used as an external attachment, control modules that manage power and adapt assistance to the rider based on load, as well as sensors that monitor torque and effort to regulate power delivery.

Created in 2022, it stands out not only for its efficiency but especially for its super light weight – only 1.4 kilograms, with a total system weight of 3.2 kilograms and a torque of 55 newton meters.

In 2024, the X30 model was released, which has a lower torque – 45 newton meters, and is also heavier than its predecessor, weighing 1.9 kilograms, with a total system weight of 4 kilograms. A step back? Maybe, but not entirely. The main advantage of X30 is that it is more versatile and better suited for everyday use – for city, kids’, and gravel bikes, while the X20 system is mainly aimed at sport riding.

This is exactly the system used by the electric gravel bike Sterrato Mho.

We chose Mahle because we did not want to make any compromises on quality. We trusted a company with many years of experience and a real contribution to alternative transportation methods. We wanted a partner who would be sufficiently transparent with us and their customers so that everyone can fully understand what they are buying, what the drive system is, and most importantly – from whom they are buying it.

Drag Bicycles and Mahle share a common goal: to encourage more people to use alternative and eco-friendly ways of getting around, namely bicycles.

Technical specifications

To not sacrifice comfort for ecology, the bike includes not only the incredible X30 electric motor but also all other components offered by a modern electric bike, again from Mahle.

Electric gear system with internal wiring, HMI display system to show battery level. Internal iX2 battery with 237 watt-hours capacity, lasting up to 80 kilometers and charging to 80% in 2 hours using a 4A fast charging system. With the optional external Mahle iX1 battery, an additional 55 kilometers of range is added.

The bike also includes a PAS Sensor that detects torque and effort applied and assists the rider evenly.

- X30 PAS Sensor, which detects torque and effort applied and assists the rider evenly.

-HMI display system to show battery level.

Sterrato Mho – a symbol of quality.

Sterrato Mho has become one of Drag Bicycles’ major achievements, demonstrating how far the brand can go. It showed quality, design, and exquisite details. A great collaboration and a bike that both we and you love to use for adventures. Sterrato Mho – the electric gravel bike.
